Multiples (2000-2001)

Exhibition: December 06, 2001 - February 09, 2002

Joseph Grigely's art is an art about conversations--the paths they take, the shapes and colors they have, and the stories they tell in the process of being retold. Grigely, who became deaf as a result of a childhood accident, uses as his raw material the written conversations that he has in his daily life; the scraps of paper on which hearing people have written notes, names, or phrases in order to 'converse' with him when he cannot read their lips. He uses these scraps of conversations to build wall pieces and table-top tableaus that all take as their subject matter the ineluctable differences between speech and writing, and reading and listening.

For his exhibition at Nadine Gandy Gallery, Grigely will present an installation of new multiples and related work entitled "You." "You" consists of a series of pigment prints of enlarged names of people and an audio. The names are ordinary names, written by ordinary people-names like "Hilke" and "Jenaba"-but through a process of enlarging the names, they become nuanced drawings that reflect the singularly individual nature of linguistic identity. Along with these new prints, Grigely's installation includes an audio of inflected voices produced in collaboration with Amy Vogel.

Grigely has had solo shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Anthony d'Offay Gallery, London; the Musée d'art Moderne in Paris; and the Barbican Centre in London. His group shows include the 2000 Whitney Biennial; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Matthew Marks Gallery, New York; Portikus, Frankfurt; Kunsthaus, Zürich; and the Venice, Berlin, and Sydney Biennials. His upcoming shows for spring 2002 include Galerie Air de Paris, Paris; Kunstmuseum, Bern; and Cohan Leslie and Browne, New York.
