I made the first drawing from the "Cities" series for an exhibition about Egon Schiele and contemporary art. The curator had hoped for me to do a research work on Vienna modernism, but instead I thought of the contemporary touristic commodification of art and artists, and made a simple pencil-drawing of the word "Schielestadt".
Finally I did not exhibit the drawing (or even show it to the curator), but two years later continued the series into an ongoing documentation and speculation on the identities of places.
Andreas Fogarasi
After studying architecture, Andreas Fogarasi (born 1977 in Vienna, where he lives and works) decided to further his studies at the Fine Art School in Vienna following a residency at the Pavillon, Palais de Tokyo during 2002-2003.
Preoccupied by representations of place, power and identity in public space, Andreas Fogarasi's work comments the dissimulated way by which the State defines and regulates behaviour within its borders. Through his work, Andreas Fogarasi observes the city and its codes of representation, modernism and politics of the masses.
Andreas Fogarasi was awarded the renowned Otto Mauer Prize (2016) and in 2007 the Golden Lion for his exhibition in the Hungarian Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale. His work was represented in numerous exhibitions internationally.
